Carbon dioxide emissions are fuel consumption related

Carbon dioxide (CO2) exists naturally in the atmosphere and is needed by plants for the photosynthesis. However, it is also a greenhouse gas and transmits visible light while absorbing infrared light. CO2 emissions are playing a key role in producing global warming and climate change.

There is a wide-spread agreement that global mean temperature should not increase more than 2°C over the pre-industrial level. To meet that target with a reasonable degree of confidence, global emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 must be 50-85 per cent below the 1990 level, according to the 2007 assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Some of the effects that are expected from increased temperatures are:

  • Rise of sea levels
  • Increase in precipitation over the northern part of the globe
  • Increased frequency of extreme weather conditions

The emissions of CO2 are directly related to fuel consumption and are dependent on the type of fuel burned. Therefore, energy efficiency is the key factor in reducing CO2 emissions.
