Antifouling

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a convention banning the application of Tributyltin (TBT) paints from 2003 and their use from 2008.

The convention came into force 17 September, 2008. The European Commission has adopted a directive to ban application of TBT paints on ships' hulls in compliance with the IMO convention. The directive was effective already in July, 2003 as an interim measure until the IMO convention came into force.
