The Company
The Wallenius Lines story begins in 1934. This was the year wholesaler Olof Wallenius acquired his very first vessel, set up a shipping company and became ship owner Olof Wallenius. He bought the vessel as a practical solution for the need of transporting vegetable oils – soya oil – along the coast of Sweden. Since then, Wallenius Lines has grown into one of the world’s largest actors in the global sea transportation and logistics market. New business concepts have constantly been tested; some have withstood the test of time while others have long since been abandoned.
Since the 1950s, Wallenius Lines has been one of the worlds leading shipping companies in the car carrier and RoRo market and entered already in the mid 1990s into the Logistics market. The shipping and logistics services are nowadays offered through a number of joint ventures; Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL), EUKOR Car Carriers, United European Car Carriers (UECC), American Roll-On, Roll-Off Carriers (ARC) and American Auto Logistics (AAL). Together they transport approximately seven million vehicles annually.
The fleet
Together with its partners, Wallenius Lines controls more than 180 vessels. Some 40 of the vessels are wholly/partly owned or long-term chartered by Wallenius. The vessels, PCC (Pure Car Carriers), PCTCs (Pure Car Truck Carriers) and LCTCs (Large Car Truck Carriers) have a loading capacity of 3,000 to 8,000 cars and are operated by WWL, EUKOR, UECC or ARC. Wallenius Marine is responsible for ship management and technical development for the Wallenius fleet.
Over the three next years, more than 40 newbuildings of various sizes and configurations will be delivered for deployment in the operating companies’ different fleets. Some of the vessels, the 228 m long LCTC vessels, are designed to carry up to 8,000 cars, making them the largest car carriers in the world. A well-planned and co-ordinated newbuilding programme is essential in order to meet the growing need for ocean transportation of cars and other type of rolling cargo.
Lone Fønss Schrøder is President of Wallenius Lines.
